1,2,3 – Buy a fragrance to put underneath the Christmas Tree
A practical guide to buying fragrance
Choosing the perfect scent can be a tedious task, but with a little bit of pre-planning, giving the gift of a personally selected fragrance can be a memorable gift at Christmas.
Fragrance evaluator and expert, Erica Moore from Fragrances Of The World explains that with three simple steps, choosing the perfect fragrance can be easy.
STEP 1 – Research
“Ask a few questions and see if you can find out the names of three or four perfumes they have worn before or still wear. This will give you an idea of the family of fragrances they prefer,” says Moore.
STEP 2 – Shop
Once you have identified the fragrance family that appeals most to the person you are buying for, ask the sales assistant to provide you with a sample from each of the groups in that family; Fresh, Crisp, Classical and Rich. Make sure you write the names down for future reference and future gifting.
“Don’t limit your search to just the major retailers – also look to some of the niche perfumeries too,” Moore suggests.
Another handy tip is to spray the perfume on your own skin and see if it evokes a response from the intended recipient.
STEP 3 – Purchase
It’s not always easy to do, but try to be intuitive in your choice and go with your initial reactions.
“Our sense of smell is one of our most subliminal and primal senses,” says Moore.
“If you don’t feel too silly, try to close your eyes when you are smelling the fragrance. Most importantly don’t over-do it (odour fatigue can set in after only a few testers) so take your time and have fun!”
If you really aren’t sure about your choice, take a safe option and buy them an ancillary product such as body lotion or shower gel. You can upgrade to the perfume next Christmas or birthday if they love it.
Developed by fragrance expert and author of Fragrances of the World, Michael Edwards, The Fragrance Wheel segregates the four primary fragrance groups, into 14 distinct families including the Aromatic Fougères, a universal fragrance family that draws on elements from all other families. Use the fragrance wheel to help you identify someone’s favourite family of scents.

The Fragrance Foundation raises over $4,000 for Look Good…Feel Better
Parfums Gourmands, the Fragrance Foundation Australia’s annual gala dinner, raised more than $4,200 in a live raffle for the Cancer Patients Foundation charity Look Good…Feel Better.
Held on Thursday 17th November at Sydney’s iconic harbourside restaurant Catalina, the 2011 Parfurm Gourmands was a celebratory dinner of the senses with fragrant wine and food. Associate Editor of marie claire magazine, Emily Taylor, hosted the event, donating her time for the evening.
Guests who hailed from all sectors of the fragrance industry were delighted by the essence of the water fragrance family which was captured in both the venue and the menu. Over 90 guests enjoyed a unique three-course seafood menu created by head chef Mark Axisa, with head sommelier, Paul Heath matching aromatic wines to each course. Mr Heath also spoke on the unique olfactory experience between fragrance, food and wine.
Michel-Henri Carriol, president of the Fragrance Foundation Australia and Trimex, praised his industry colleagues for their generosity in supporting the cause:
“Parfums Gourmands is a highlight in the fragrance industry’s social calendar. We all enjoy the opportunity to come together, suppliers, retailers, media supporters and friends and celebrate fragrant wine and food in such a spectacular Sydney venue like Catalina, and of course raise funds for our industry charity Look Good…Feel Better, through the Cancer Patient Foundation.” said Mr Carriol.
The money was raised through a raffle of luxury personal and travel items donated by Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts, Bally, donna hay, ghd, Moët & Chandon, Dior and Catalina Restaurant.
